Tobias and Sarah’s prayer on their wedding night, in the Book of Tobit, is only a few lines long. It asks for one thing: “that we may grow old together.” Most mornings that is still the whole prayer.
Historical Context
Praying for your husband in the morning does not need to be long or eloquent. It means handing him to God before the day gets hold of him. The prayers below are short enough to say over coffee, and one is written to be sent as a message.
A Good Morning Prayer for My Husband
Lord, thank you for the man asleep (or rushing) beside me.
Go with him today.
Give him clear thinking at work and patience with the people in it.
Keep him safe on the road.
Let him know he is loved before he walks out the door,
and bring him home to us tonight.
St Joseph, pray for him.
Amen.
A Prayer Before His Work Day
Lord, bless the work of his hands today.
Give him strength for what is heavy
and wisdom for what is complicated.
Let him work honestly and be treated fairly.
And when the day is hard, remind him what he is working for.
Amen.
For a Husband Who Is Far Away
Lord, he is waking up somewhere else today.
Be with him where I cannot be.
Keep him safe, keep him faithful, keep him close in heart.
Shorten the distance, and bring him home soon.
Amen.
For a Hard Season in Our Marriage
Lord, we are not at our best right now.
This morning I choose to pray for him instead of against him.
Soften what is hard in both of us.
Help us speak gently today, and listen longer.
Make us one again.
Amen.
A Morning Blessing to Text Him
Good morning. Praying God goes ahead of you today, guards your steps, and brings you home to me tonight. Love you.
Best Times for This Prayer
- Before he leaves for work, or as soon as you wake up.
- Before a big day: an interview, a surgery, a hard conversation.
- When he travels or works away from home.
- On your wedding anniversary.
- On 19 March, the feast of St Joseph, patron of husbands.
Scripture Connection
“My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.” — Psalm 5:3
“Look up” is the important part. The psalmist prays in the morning and then watches for the answer through the day. A morning prayer for your husband works the same way: you say it, and then you watch for God’s hand in his day.
