“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”
Exodus 14:14

Most of us know the famous story of Moses parting the Red Sea so that the Israelites could escape slavery in Egypt. As the Egyptians chased after the Israelites with horses and chariots, the Israelites thought they were doomed. The came up to the shore of the Red Sea and had nowhere else to go. As they cried out in desperation to Moses, this was his reply. “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

Moses lifted his staff and parted the water and the Israelites crossed on dry land. As the Egyptians came behind them, God let the waters roll back, and the army was destroyed. The Israelites were free. Not because they did anything to save themselves, but because God fought for them.

Many times when we are at our most desperate moments, we are searching frantically for something – anything to save us. We think of everything that we could do to solve the problem or open up an escape route. It’s often in our hardest times that we trust ourselves most and God the least. However, it is in those moments where God wants us to allow him to fight – just be still.

All that was required of the Israelites was to watch as the sea was parted, and walk across on dry land. When we face hard times, God simply requires us to turn to him, watch him work for us, and walk.

So if you’re facing hard times, take a moment to return your trust to God. Be willing to walk, but while you wait, be still. Trust God enough to be still. He will fight for you.

Prayer:

Father,
I know that you care about me and want good things for me. I know that you will fight for me. Help me not to trust myself more than I trust you. Help me to be still, to trust you, and to allow you to work in my life.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
