Historical Context
St Paul told Timothy to pray “for kings, and for all that are in authority,” and he wrote that under the Roman emperors. Praying for the nation has never meant approving of everything it does. It means asking God to bless the people and guide those who lead them.

Lord, on this Independence Day, bless our country.
Thank you for the freedoms we have
and for those who won them.
Give our leaders wisdom and honesty,
our laws justice, and our people mercy toward each other.
Where we have failed, forgive us.
