Daily Devotional – John 10:28-30 – August 8, 2023

“I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.”
John 10:28-30

This verse comes from Jesus’ famous “Good Shepherd” metaphor. He says that his followers are the sheep and that he is their Good Shepherd, willing to lay down his life for his flock. In this verse, he speaks to the protection that his flock have with him as their shepherd. Of course, this metaphor goes far beyond just physical protection, he means the assurance of eternal life.

Above all, this verse is incredible reassuring to me. Jesus makes it very clear that those who follow him will not face death the way the rest of the world will. Death will only be the beginning of eternal life with him. What’s even better is that Jesus strongly states that no one can take his people away from him. He won’t let sin or death or even Satan himself take anyone away from his flock. He says that of all who the Father has called to him, none will be lost.

He reminds us that God is in charge, he is all powerful. His hand is protecting all of us who follow him. No one is more is more powerful, no one is able to defeat him. That is the power that protects us and assures us of our eternal life. What an incredible thought.

All of the power of God was made human through Jesus Christ, and he chose to lay down his life for our sake, for the sake of his flock, so that no one could snatch a single one away. He defeated death once and for all, and he is bringing his flock with him into new life. Hallelujah!

Prayer:

Father,
Thank you for Jesus, our Good Shepherd. Thank you for choosing us to be a part of your flock. Thank you for your protection and your assurance through Jesus.
In His Holy Name,
Amen.
