Fire brigades have prayed to St Florian for centuries. He was a Roman officer in what is now Austria who, according to tradition, organized a brigade to fight fires, and was executed in 304 for refusing to sacrifice to the Roman gods. His picture, pouring a bucket of water on a burning building, still hangs in firehouses. (If you came here from the anime Fire Force, its short prayer for the Infernals ends with “Latom”; the prayers below are for real-world crews.)
Historical Context
A Firefighter’s Prayer Before a Shift
Lord, when the alarm goes off today, go with me.
Give me strength to carry what I must,
speed to reach those who need help,
and a clear head when there’s smoke and noise.
Protect my crew, and let me protect them.
If I have to choose, help me choose well.
Bring us all back to the station.
St Florian, pray for us.
Amen.
A Prayer for the Crew
Lord, bless everyone on this shift:
the officers, the engineers, the medics, the probies.
Keep us sharp in training and humble with each other.
Amen.
After a Bad Call
Lord, I saw things today I can’t forget.
Hold the people we couldn’t save.
Hold their families.
And help me carry this without carrying it alone.
Amen.
For Firefighters’ Families
Father, give peace to the families who hear sirens and wonder.
Strengthen them through long shifts and missed holidays.
Amen.
Best Times for This Prayer

Scripture Connection
“When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.” — Isaiah 43:2
Isaiah doesn’t promise that we’ll avoid the fire. He promises that God will be with us in it. Firefighters know the difference.
