White Light Prayer Of Protection

The “white light” prayer of protection usually involves imagining yourself surrounded by bright light that shields you from harm. Its best-known form is a short prayer written in 1941 by James Dillet Freeman of the Unity movement, which says that God’s light surrounds you and God’s presence watches over you. It became so popular that Buzz Aldrin carried a copy to the moon on Apollo 11.

3 minute read

Christians have their own, older tradition of praying for light and protection, rooted in Scripture: “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?” The light isn’t a force or an energy. It’s a person. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.” The most famous Christian protection prayer, St Patrick’s Breastplate, puts it this way: Christ in every direction around you.

Historical Context

Traditional prayer: St Patrick’s Breastplate (the Lorica), early medieval Ireland
Scripture: “The LORD is my light and my salvation,” Psalm 27:1
Christ: “I am the light of the world,” John 8:12

From St Patrick’s Breastplate

Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

A Prayer of Protection in Christ’s Light

Lord Jesus, you are the Light of the world.
Surround me with your light today.
Stand between me and every harm, seen and unseen.
Guard my mind from fear and my heart from evil.
Wherever I go, you are there before me.
I’m safe in you.
Amen.

For Protection of a Loved One

Lord, I place (name) in your light.
Wrap them in your protection wherever they are tonight.
Amen.

For Protection at Night

Visit this house, O Lord, and drive far from it all the snares of the enemy.
Let your holy angels dwell here to keep us in peace.
Amen.

Best Times for This Prayer

  • In the morning, before leaving the house.
  • Before travel or entering a stressful situation.
  • At night, for your home and family.
  • On 17 March, St Patrick’s Day.

Scripture Connection

“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” — Psalm 27:1

The psalmist’s light is the Lord himself. Protection in the Christian sense isn’t a technique; it’s a relationship with the one who is stronger than anything we fear.
