Salesman Prayer

One of the first Christians in Europe was a saleswoman. Lydia of Thyatira was “a seller of purple,” the expensive dyed cloth worn by the wealthy, doing business in the Roman colony of Philippi. When she heard Paul preach by the river, she believed, was baptised, and immediately put her business to use: she opened her house to the apostles.

3 minute read

Selling is honest work when it is done honestly. These prayers ask for success, and for the kind of success you can be proud of.

Historical Context

Scripture: Lydia, seller of purple, Acts 16:14–15
Patron of merchants: St Homobonus of Cremona, 13 November
Principle: “A false balance is abomination to the LORD,” Proverbs 11:1

Homobonus, whose name means “good man,” was a twelfth-century Italian merchant who was known for fair dealing and for giving much of his profit away. He is one of the very few lay merchants ever canonised, and he is the patron of businesspeople.

A Salesman’s Prayer

Lord, bless my work today.
Open the right doors and send me the right people.
Help me listen more than I talk,
understand what customers actually need,
and sell only what will truly help them.
Give me success without dishonesty,
and let my word be good.
Amen.

Before a Big Call or Meeting

Lord, this one matters.
Calm my nerves, sharpen my thinking and steady my voice.
Let me present the truth well and leave the decision with them.
Amen.

After Rejection

Lord, that was another no.
Don’t let it get into my head or my heart.
Give me the resilience to pick up the phone again,
and remind me my worth isn’t my numbers.
Amen.

For a Slow Month

Lord, it’s the end of the month and I’m short.
I’ve worked hard and it hasn’t come in.
Provide for my family, and send what you will.
Keep me from cutting corners out of fear.
Amen.

Best Times for This Prayer

  • Each morning before your first call or appointment.
  • Before a pitch, presentation or negotiation.
  • After a lost deal.
  • At the end of a quarter or sales period.
  • On 13 November, the feast of St Homobonus.

Scripture Connection

“A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.” — Proverbs 11:1

Proverbs does not condemn trade; it condemns cheating at it. A “just weight” delights God. Honest selling is not a compromise of faith; it is one of the ways faith shows up at work.
