Prayer To Be Born Again

Nicodemus came to Jesus at night. He was a respected teacher, a member of the ruling council, and he was curious but cautious. Jesus told him, “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus was baffled: how can a grown man be born a second time? Jesus answered that he must be “born of water and of the Spirit.”

3 minute read

Christians have understood that new birth in a few ways. Catholics, Orthodox and many Protestants see it first in baptism, where we’re born of water and the Spirit. Evangelical Christians often emphasize a personal moment of turning to Christ in faith. Both point to the same truth: Christianity isn’t self-improvement. It’s new life, given by God.

Historical Context

Scripture: Jesus and Nicodemus, John 3:1-21
New creation: “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature,” 2 Corinthians 5:17
Sacrament: Baptism, “born of water and of the Spirit,” John 3:5

Nicodemus seems to have taken it to heart. After the crucifixion, he came back openly, in daylight, carrying a hundred pounds of spices to help bury Jesus.

A Prayer to Be Born Again

Lord Jesus, I come to you like Nicodemus,
with questions, but wanting the truth.
I’ve tried to run my own life, and I’ve sinned.
I’m sorry. I turn back to you.
I believe you died for me and rose again.
Give me new life by your Holy Spirit.
Make me a new creation.
From today, I want to follow you.
Amen.

Renewing Your Baptismal Promises

I reject sin, so as to live in the freedom of the children of God.
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was born, suffered, died and rose from the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church,
the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.
Amen.

What Next

If you’ve prayed this and you’re not baptized, talk to a priest or pastor. In the Catholic Church, adults prepare for baptism through the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA). If you were baptized long ago and drifted away, confession is the way home.

Best Times for This Prayer

  • Whenever you’re ready to turn to Christ.
  • At the Easter Vigil, when baptismal promises are renewed.
  • On the anniversary of your baptism.

Scripture Connection

“Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” — John 3:5

New birth isn’t something we can produce, any more than a baby gives birth to itself. It’s a gift of the Spirit. Our part is to say yes.
