Prayer For Presidents Day

Presidents’ Day began as a celebration of George Washington’s birthday, 22 February. Since 1971 it has been held on the third Monday of February, and many people now treat it as a day to remember all the presidents. Whatever you think of any particular one, Christians have a clear instruction about them: pray.

3 minute read

Paul told Timothy to make “supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks… for kings, and for all that are in authority.” He wrote that under the Roman emperor Nero. Praying for leaders has never depended on agreeing with them.

Historical Context

Observance: Third Monday in February
Origin: George Washington’s birthday, 22 February 1732
Scripture: Prayer for those in authority, 1 Timothy 2:1-2

In June 1783, as the Revolutionary War ended, Washington wrote a long letter to the governors of the states. He closed it with a prayer that God would incline the citizens “to do Justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that Charity, humility and pacific temper of mind, which were the Characteristicks of the Divine Author of our blessed Religion, and without an humble imitation of whose example in these things, we can never hope to be a happy Nation.”

A Prayer for Presidents’ Day

Lord God, ruler of all nations,
we pray for the President of the United States
and for all who hold authority in our land.
Give them wisdom, integrity and humility.
Guide their decisions toward justice and peace.
Protect them and their families.
And give all of us the charity and humility to be a good people.
Amen.

For Unity

Lord, our country is divided.
Help us listen to each other, disagree without hatred,
and work together for the common good.
Amen.

For Past Presidents

Lord, we remember those who have led this nation.
Grant eternal rest to those who have died.
Amen.

Best Times for This Prayer

Scripture Connection

“I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.” — 1 Timothy 2:1-2

“First of all,” Paul says. Prayer for leaders isn’t an afterthought; it comes first.
