The book of Lamentations was written after Jerusalem was destroyed. It’s five chapters of grief. But right in the middle of it, the writer says something astonishing: “This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning.” Hope didn’t come from his circumstances. It came from remembering who God is.
Historical Context
A Prayer for Better Days
Lord, I’m tired of this season.
I’m hoping for better days, but I’m running low on hope.
Remind me that your mercies are new every morning, including this one.
Give me strength for today, not all of next month.
Send me small signs that you’re still here.
And when better days come, let me remember you were with me in these ones.
Amen.
For Strength to Get Through Today
Lord, just today. Help me get through just today.
Amen.
For a Family in a Hard Time
Lord, our family is struggling.
Keep us kind to each other under pressure.
Hold us together until things turn.
Amen.
