Daily Devotional – Psalm 118:5 – April 27, 2023

“When hard pressed, I cried to the Lord; he brought me into a spacious place.”
Psalm 118:5

When you’re backed into a corner, what’s your first move? Maybe sometimes it’s to gather up all your strength and start pushing back. Maybe it’s just to give up and accept it. King David’s first move was to pray. There are several times throughout David’s life where he is literally running for his life. Every time, he calls on God first. Sometimes hew fights back, sometimes he runs, sometimes he hides. But every time, he asks God for help. Every time, God delivered him.

Life can back us in to so many different kinds of corners. Health, finances, family issues, and more. No matter the circumstance, no matter the enemy you’re facing, no matter the obstacles in front of you, call out to God. He will deliver you.

Paul says in 2 Corinthians 4:8-9, “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.” Paul was no stranger to being hard pressed. He was imprisoned repeatedly, tortured, shipwrecked, and finally killed for his faith. He knew adversity and he faced many hard times. Through it all, however, he knew that he was never crushed, never hopeless, never abandoned, and never destroyed because God was with him. He knew that through every struggle, there was an opportunity for Christ to be shown to everyone around him. For him, that was enough to keep going.

Be encouraged today that no matter what you face in life, you never have to face it alone. No matter what battles you have to fight, the Lord will go to fight for you. No matter what difficulties you have to face, God can be glorified through them.

Prayer:

God,
When I am hard pressed, help me to run to you first. Shelter me in your refuge, protect me from those who persecute me, deliver me from the sin and circumstances that surround me. Help me to rest in your presence and be encouraged by your steadfast love.
In Jesus Name,
Amen.
