Daily Devotional – Joshua 1:8-9 – August 23, 2023

“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.  Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Joshua 1:8-9

The challenge from the verse above may seem daunting: to meditate on the Word of God day and night. It barely scathes the surface of the dedication, practices, and daily discipline it takes to keep the Word on your lips and to be in meditation. However, the promise of the reward is evident: success. To meditate on God’s word is to go over God’s truth in our hearts, souls and minds constantly. By constantly reviewing God’s words, we are forming a deep impression on our hearts, and forming a deeper relationship with Him as the word permeates into our minds and therefore into everything we do. As if this was not reward enough, the verse above indicates that ‘you will be prosperous and successful.’

The definition of success in this verse can be interpreted in a variety of ways, but the success the verse talks about is different than that of the world’s definition of promotions, money, etc. The success the Lord is talking about in this verse comes from the closeness of having the Lord’s word dwelling in you. With constant meditation on God’s word, you will be able to see and better understand the Lord’s will and purpose for your life.

You will not be overwhelmed with fear, or become discouraged, because you have a deep intimate relationship with the Lord that has come from diving deep into his word. The true success in this life as a Christian is to stay in the Word of God daily, diving deeper and deeper each day to grow in our understanding of our Lord and Savior. We will find our success as we grow to know God better, know his Word, hear his voice, and understand his will for our life.

Prayer:

Lord,
Help me to meditate on your word day and night. Help me to make it more of a priority in my day to day life to know your Word, to read your Scripture, and to spend time with you. Then Lord, I will be better prepared to understand the true success in my Christian life.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen
