“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”
Psalm 46:10
Work. Kids. Chores. School. Bills. Taxes. There are a million things that make our lives stressful. We’re so busy in this day and age, and we hardly ever have time to take a break. The concept of Sabbath is all but gone from our culture as we delegate our Sundays to sports and work and every chore that needs to be done before Monday.
When Jesus and his disciples were on the Sea of Galilee in a boat, there was an awful storm. It was so bad, the scripture says, that the boat was nearly about to break into pieces. Where was Jesus? He was asleep in the back of the boat. How could he be sleeping at a time like this? The waves were crashing, the rain was pouring down, and the wind was ripping. Yet, he slept. His disciples woke him up and asked him if he even cared that they were about to die. They were distraught. Jesus simply said, “Peace, be still.” The wind and the waves stopped. Everything was calm.
There are all kinds of storms swirling around in our lives. In the history of the world, people have never been “busier” than they are today. We’ve forgotten how to be still.
In Psalm 46, we are told of God’s great power over all the earth, his unmatchable strength and greatness. And after he demonstrates all of this, he tells us what we need to do: “Be still and know that I am God.” We need only to be still and to know that God is powerful, that he is fighting for us, and that he is mighty to save.
Learn to be still. Take time to rest in God’s presence. Rest among the wind and waves knowing that God is in control of the storm, and he will not let you drown.
Prayer:
God,
You are awesome and mighty, and I praise your holy name. I thank you that you are my fortress and my protector. Help me to learn not to stress and worry futilely when you’re already in control. Help me to surrender control to you, to trust you, and to be still in your presence.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
