Halloween Prayer

Christians feel differently about Halloween. Some love it as a harmless night of costumes and candy; others are uneasy about the ghosts and witches in every shop window. Both can pray. Halloween is, after all, the eve of All Hallows: the night before the Church celebrates every saint in heaven.

2 minute read

For Protestants, 31 October is also Reformation Day, remembering the day in 1517 when Martin Luther posted his Ninety-five Theses in Wittenberg. Whatever your tradition, the night is a good time to remember that the light is stronger than the dark.

Historical Context

Name: All Hallows’ Eve, the vigil of All Saints, 1 November
Also: Reformation Day, 31 October 1517
Scripture: “The light shineth in darkness,” John 1:5

A Halloween Prayer of Light

Lord Jesus, you are the Light of the world,
and the darkness has never overcome you.
On this night, when people play with fear,
let me remember that I don’t have to be afraid.
Shine in my home and on my street.
Make me a light to my neighbours.
Amen.

A Prayer Against Fear

Father, some of what I see tonight frightens me or my children.
Remind us that you are stronger than anything in the dark.
Give us peaceful sleep.
Amen.

For Children Out Tonight

Lord, watch over every child in costume tonight.
Keep them safe crossing streets and at every door.
Amen.

A Reformation Day Prayer

Lord, thank you for your Word and for your grace, freely given.
Heal what divides your Church,
and make us one, as you and the Father are one.
Amen.

Best Times for This Prayer

  • On the evening of 31 October.
  • Before taking children trick-or-treating.
  • Before a church Trunk-or-Treat or harvest festival.

Scripture Connection

“And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” — John 1:5

John’s Gospel opens with the oldest Halloween truth there is: darkness is real, but it doesn’t win. On a night devoted to playing with the dark, that’s worth saying out loud.
