Prayer To Prevent Miscarriage

The first weeks of pregnancy are full of hope and nerves. Many women hold their breath until the twelve-week scan, and those who’ve had a miscarriage before often feel that fear through the whole pregnancy. Miscarriage is far more common than most people realise, and it’s almost never caused by anything the mother did.

2 minute read

Praying for a safe pregnancy isn’t a magic shield, and losing a baby is never a sign that someone didn’t pray hard enough. It’s a way of placing your child in God’s hands from the very beginning. The psalmist says God knit us together in the womb. He knows this child already.

Historical Context

Patron of expectant mothers: St Gerard Majella, 16 October
Invoked against miscarriage: St Catherine of Sweden, 24 March
Scripture: “Thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb,” Psalm 139:13

A Prayer for a Safe Pregnancy

Lord, you are forming this little one right now.
Protect my baby as they grow.
Keep my body strong and healthy enough to carry this child.
Calm my fears and help me enjoy this pregnancy, one day at a time.
Guide my doctors and midwives.
St Gerard, pray for us.
Amen.

For a High-Risk Pregnancy

Lord, this pregnancy is fragile, and I’m afraid.
Hold my baby close. Give me peace through every appointment and every symptom.
Amen.

Before a Scan

Lord, let there be a heartbeat.
Whatever we see today, be with us.
Amen.

After a Loss

Lord, our baby is gone, and our hearts are broken.
We believe our child is held in your love.
Comfort us, and stay with us in this grief.
Amen.

Best Times for This Prayer

  • When you first learn you’re pregnant.
  • Before each scan or appointment.
  • Every night through the first trimester.
  • On 15 October, Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day.

Scripture Connection

“For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb.” — Psalm 139:13

Before anyone else knows about this child, God does. He’s already caring for them.
