“When I am afraid, I will trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mortal man do to me?”
What is the most afraid you have ever been? Has there ever been a time that you felt you were in grave danger, or that you had lost something irreplaceable, or faced fierce opposition? I remember being a child and going on a camping trip with my family. It was dark and we were in the middle of the woods. I got a little lost in the dark and I was terrified. I truly thought that I was doomed. I couldn’t see much. I didn’t know where my family was. I didn’t know what might be lurking in the dark that could hurt me.
It turns out I wasn’t far away from our campsite at all. I heard my dad call out my name looking for me, and I ran toward his voice. In the end, I was less than 50 yards away from my dad the whole time. Even though I was terrified, I was safe and I didn’t even know it.
That’s how God is with us. When we are afraid, he’s not far away. When we face fear, death, oppression, or pain, God is close by. We must remember that God isn’t going to leave us. He isn’t going to let us go into the dark alone. He isn’t going to let our enemies overtake us. When we fail to trust God in these things, we experience fear.
I didn’t think that my dad was close enough to help me. I didn’t think he could find me. I didn’t trust that I was safe. When I heard him call out, I realized I had been scared for no reason.
The same is true for us. We just have to listen for God calling to us. He’s always there. He’s always calling. Run to him and you’ll find safety, refuge, and peace.
Thank you for being my help in trouble, my refuge from the storm, my protector, and my savior. I pray that you will always be near to me and help me to trust you. Help me not to fear things that you are in control of, that you have promised to deliver me from.
In Jesus’ Name,
