Daily Devotional – Proverbs 14:12 – June 9, 2023

“There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.”
Proverbs 14:12

My wife and I were driving once, and I was very confident that I knew where I was going. I hadn’t been there before, but I’d seen a map and I felt sure that I could get there with no problem. Of course, as the cliché would have it, at some point along the way my wife told me she thought we were going the wrong way. I told her I knew where I was going, and that we were going the right way. Not too long after that, I realized that we should’ve arrived already and the destination was nowhere in sight. I had been completely wrong. Somewhere along the way I missed a turn and it completely ruined the directions I had in my mind. I was confident that I was headed the right way until I got to the end of the road and realized I had completely missed my destination.

The proverb above is telling us that exactly what happened on that car ride can happen to our lives. There are so many things that may seem good to us, but lead to nothing but destruction. If you look around at our modern culture you will have no difficulty finding groups of people devoted to one cause or another, passionately pursuing it because it seems right to them. Some of these are great causes, some are less so. But what is unquestionable about them all is that those people who have committed themselves to their cause believe without doubt that it is right.

Don’t be fooled. Just because something seems, appears, or feels right, doesn’t mean it is. Even Christians who start out with a decent roadmap of the love of Christ can be misled by false teachers who twist the word of God to fit their agenda. This kind of thing happens on all sides of Christianity – left, right, and center. We must all be cautious of the causes we devote ourselves to, the issues we devote our passion to, and the directions we decide to pursue in life. Just because it seems right, or someone else has told you it’s right, doesn’t mean it’s right in God’s eyes.

Dive into Scripture. Soak up the word of God and pray for understanding. Let the Holy Spirit guide your direction, not the whims of culture and society. There is a good, straight, well-paved path that leads to life, and the word of God will lead you to it. There is a much wider path, that is easier to find, and that even looks promising at first, that the world will lead you to. Don’t follow it. It only leads to destruction. Find the narrow path and follow it. There is eternal life waiting for us all at the end.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father,
I know that I am prone to misunderstanding and mistakes. I pray that you would not led me fall victim to any false teaching or uninformed beliefs that may lead me down the wrong path. I pray that I would never be so proud or self-righteous that I would not take direction from your word or from your Church. Help me to find your path and to keep it. I want to walk toward life with you.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
