Daily Devotional – Isaiah 64:8 – November 9, 2023

“But now, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter we are all the work of your hand.”
Isaiah 64:8

We are the work of God’s hands. What an amazing thought. It’s even more incredible when you look into the translation of the word “work.” The original Hebrew word for “work” in this verse is also translated as an achievement or accomplishment. How incredible that not only are we simply a product of his making, but that we are an achievement, an accomplishment in God’s eyes made by his very own hands. That’s powerful.

God is our creator. He has carefully created us and continues to mold and shape us throughout our lives. Just as a big ball of clay can become a beautiful and functional piece of art at the hands of a potter, so our lives are at the hands of God.

Have you ever watched a potter creating a vase or a pot or any other ceramic object? It’s a very entertaining thing to watch, especially when the clay is being shaped using a potter’s wheel. I bring this up because the potter starts with a chunk of unformed clay, and slowly begins to work with it. It doesn’t immediately take shape. There are several steps in building it up to be the right thickness and weight and shape and size. There is a lot of stretching and compressing and pushing and pulling. By the end, it’s a beautiful finished product, but all the while in between, the clay is moving and changing and being worked into its final shape.

That is our life. God is our potter, we are the clay. He has the big picture in mind and he knows how to get us to our perfect final form. We have to trust him to mold us through every step of the way. There will be a lot of change, a lot of stretching and pushing and pulling, maybe even some removing of excess clay, but in the end the result is God’s handiwork, an achievement, an accomplishment, the work of his very own hands.

Prayer:

Father,
Help us to trust you as you mold and shape our lives. We know that you have a plan and you know just how to stretch and push and pull us to form us into who you’ve created us to be. I pray that we will embrace the change and growth that you ask of us and willingly allow you to make us a work to be proud of.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
