Daily Devotional – Hebrews 13:8 – July 24, 2023

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
Hebrews 13:8

Such a simple verse, yet it’s so powerful. The steadfast nature of Christ is such an encouraging fact. Jesus has always been and will always be the same: a loving, merciful, and perfect savior for anyone who has, does, or will believe in Him.

The incredible thing about this verse is that it acknowledges Jesus’ existence since the beginning of time. As John says at the start of his gospel, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” He calls Jesus “the Word,” the physical manifestation of God, the words through which creation was spoken into existence, the word through which we are saved. Jesus has been with God since the beginning, and his life and sacrifice have been planned since the creation of mankind. God has always had a plan for our salvation, and Jesus has always been there to see it through.

He is still alive today, working out our salvation, perfecting our faith.

He will never cease to exist. There is no future where Jesus will not be present. The gospel of Christ will not be quelled by increasingly secular culture, by persecution of Christianity, or by any other trend in this world. Jesus died once and for all sins, and now he lives forever, seated at the right hand of God. His sacrifice and salvation don’t expire. The free gift of grace will never be invalidated. He has defeated sin and death and will reign forever.

Praise God.

Prayer:

Holy God,
Thank you for your plan of salvation for us from the beginning. Thank you for Jesus Christ and for his steadfast love and mercy. Thank you for our assurance that Jesus lives and reigns forever. You are the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow, and for that we praise you.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
