The Gospel gives the model. When a storm nearly swamped the disciples’ boat on the Sea of Galilee, Jesus was asleep in the stern. They woke him in a panic. “And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.”
Historical Context
The Trisagion, an ancient hymn of the Eastern and Western Church, is traditionally linked to an earthquake in fifth-century Constantinople, and has long been prayed in times of natural danger.
A Catholic Prayer for Storms
Lord Jesus, you calmed the wind and the waves with a word.
Speak that word over this storm:
Peace, be still.
Protect our home and everyone in it.
Watch over those caught outside, those on the roads,
and the emergency workers who go out into it.
Mary, Star of the Sea, pray for us.
Amen.
The Trisagion
Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One,
have mercy on us.
(Three times)
To St Barbara in a Thunderstorm
St Barbara, protect us from lightning and fire.
Pray for us, that we may not die suddenly or unprepared.
Amen.
For Children Afraid of Storms
Jesus, the thunder is loud, but you are stronger.
Hold me until it’s over.
Amen.

Scripture Connection
“And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.” — Mark 4:39
Jesus then asked his disciples, “Why are ye so fearful?” He wasn’t scolding them for praying. He was inviting them to trust him even while the waves were high.
