Prayer For Divorce Settlement

No one plans to need this prayer. A divorce settlement often comes after months or years of pain, and then asks people at their most exhausted to make some of the biggest financial and family decisions of their lives, usually through lawyers and often in a courtroom.

3 minute read

These prayers do not take sides. They ask for fairness, for peace, for the children to be protected, and for the strength to get through it without becoming someone you don’t want to be.

Historical Context

Scripture: “If it be possible… live peaceably with all men,” Romans 12:18
Scripture: “The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart,” Psalm 34:18
For Catholics: civil divorce and annulment are separate questions; a parish priest can explain

Paul’s advice in Romans is realistic: “If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.” He knows it isn’t always possible. But the part that is in your hands is still yours to do.

A Prayer for the Divorce Settlement

Lord, I need your help through this settlement.
Let it be fair, to me and to my former spouse.
Give the lawyers, mediator and judge wisdom and honesty.
Keep me from greed and from giving up what I truly need.
Help me speak calmly and decide wisely.
And let this end in peace, not in more wounds.
Amen.

Before Court or Mediation

Lord, today is hard.
Steady my nerves and guard my words.
Let the truth be heard, and let what is right be done.
Help me leave the room without bitterness.
Amen.

For the Children

Lord, protect our children through this.
Don’t let them become weapons or messengers.
Let both of us love them well and speak kindly of each other in front of them.
Heal what this has done to their hearts.
Amen.

When It Is Final

Lord, it’s over.
I grieve what was lost and what was hoped for.
Help me forgive, in time, and be forgiven.
Give me a new start and a heart that can love again.
Amen.

Best Times for This Prayer

  • Before meeting your lawyer or the other side.
  • Before mediation or a court hearing.
  • When the paperwork brings everything back up.
  • On the day the divorce is finalized.

Scripture Connection

“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” — Psalm 34:18

God’s nearness to the broken-hearted doesn’t depend on whose fault things were. Wherever you stand in this, the promise is that he is close.
