“Whom have I in heaven but you?
And earth has nothing I desire besides you.”
Psalm 73:25
We want so much. We want a new car, new shoes, a bigger house, nicer clothes, and every little thing in between. As a society we have become so materialistic that we try to fill every desire by buying something. What we can learn from this psalm, however, is that the root of all of our desire is a desire for our creator.
Beneath every want there is a deeper desire from our soul, a desire to be united with God, to be fulfilled in only the way that he can, to have the bread of life, the living water. We try to fill that empty space with people and things, but eventually they aren’t enough to fill the hole anymore. The only thing that can truly satisfy us in this world and in the next is a relationship with God. We long for the joy, peace, comfort, and satisfaction that comes from a life lived in harmony with God and according to his will, but instead we listen to the world’s advice on how to be happy – money, sex, material things, and the list goes on.
To be satisfied, we need only recognize the ancient truth of this psalm. Earth has nothing for us to desire. Everything is fleeting and nothing will fulfill you in the way that God can. In Heaven, there is no more want, because we are in the presence of our creator, God. So whether in this life or the next, only one thing is truly necessary for the fulfillment we seek – a relationship with God.
Prayer:
Father,
Thank you for this wisdom. I pray that I would always look to you for my fulfillment and satisfaction, not to the temptations of this world.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
