“For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.”
Psalm 103:11-12
God’s love and his forgiveness are being described in immeasurable terms throughout this Scripture. Try as he may, David describes the Lord’s love as high as the heavens are above the earth or as far as the east as from the west. For those who seek to inquire further, to gain a better grasp on just how high as the heavens are above the earth, it is thought that the universe outside of earth is approximately 46 billion light years away. This distance is so magnificent, so vast that the human eye would not possibly be able to see that distance. As for how far the east is from the west, the two never meet.
As David speaks in the Scripture above, I do not believe it was his intention to give us terms that were understandable to us. Rather than measuring God’s love and forgiveness in terms that we could comprehend such as miles or feet, he beautifully illustrates just how immeasurable, how limitless God’s love and forgiveness are. The scripture is so full of hope, and exemplifies how merciful our God is. Do we deserve such love and forgiveness as sinners in a broken world? No, certainly not. Yet, hope rings true as God sent his Son, Jesus, to atone for our sinful transgressions, to show us the depth of his love. Praise God for showing us mercy, and for choosing to show us such love and forgives that we do not deserve. It is this overwhelming gift that inspired David to write the scripture above.
Prayer:
Lord,
Thank you for giving us such a gift of love and forgiveness that it is nearly impossible for us as human beings to comprehend. Thank you for showing us your mercy daily by extending these gifts to us, when they are far from deserved.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen
