“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28
Sometimes we just need a reminder to let go. Here’s your reminder. Let go of the heavy weight that you’re carrying. The stresses of life that build up on your shoulders – work, school, kids, money, health – they get heavy. We can get so bogged down in the difficulties, anxieties, and stressors of life that we forget the big picture. We forget that we don’t have to carry that weight.
Jesus offers us his yoke instead. He says “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
The burden Jesus wants us to carry is that of gentleness, peace, humility, and rest. He wants us to find rest in him, not to add him to our list of stressors. He’s the refuge from this world and all its burdens, not just another chore on the list. With Jesus, life can be peaceful and you can find rest, even when everything else around you is going crazy. That is because to know Jesus is to be connected with God, to have assurance of salvation, and to focus on those things over worldly things.
Jesus is calling you to lay down your burdens. Set down your worries, your pain, and your weariness at his feet. He will give you a new burden to carry, the burden of gentleness and peace.
We can give our cares and struggles to Christ because He has already carried every burden on his back, and set them aside. He carried his own cross to be killed on, sacrificed for our sins. It’s the burden that only he could handle, and he did it for us. So don’t try to carry it yourself, Christ has already done it for you. Lay it at his feet and take up the yoke of Christ.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
The burdens of life can get so heavy, and it’s so easy to get off track just worrying about all of the responsibility and work and difficulty that each day requires. Let us not lose sight of Jesus. Help us to remember to lay our burdens at his feet, and give our souls rest in Jesus.
In Christ’s Name,
Amen.
