“His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’”
John 2:5
This excerpt comes from Jesus’ first miracle – turning the water into wine at the Wedding at Cana. I wanted to highlight this verse in particular because I think it calls to our attention an aspect of this miracle, and many of Jesus’ miracles, that we don’t often pay attention to – the servants.
It’s easy to overlook the people that Jesus uses to work a miracle. In this particular example, we obviously think more about Jesus and the miracle of turning the water into wine, and I don’t think that’s a bad thing. I simply think that there’s a lot that we can learn from looking at who is in the background.
When Jesus’ mother told these servants to do whatever Jesus told them, it’s because she knew that he was able to do something great through them. Of course, he could have done just as much without them, but he didn’t. He chooses to use others as instruments of his divine power, to allow us to take part with him in his ministry.
Imagine for a moment if you were one of those servants that got to take part in and witness this miracle firsthand. Imagine the overwhelming faith and awe that must have come from that. It must’ve been such a gift to have been a part of something so powerful. Jesus didn’t have to share that with anyone. He could have done it all on his own, but he allowed lowly servants to take part with him in his ministry.
There are two lessons I think we should take from this. First, Jesus allows us to take part in his ministry and uses us as instruments of his power and grace. Secondly, a willing servant is all it takes for Jesus to do something miraculous. Had those servants written him off and refused to listen to him, this story would’ve played out very differently. There is incredible power in simply being willing to let Jesus use you as his instrument.
Prayer:
Father,
Use us as instruments for your kingdom and your power. I pray that we would be willing servants, to allow Jesus to use our services however he would. Give us the faith to “do whatever he tells us.”
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
