““What value does the engraved image have, that its maker has engraved it; the molten image, even the teacher of lies, that he who fashions its form trusts in it, to make mute idols?” – Habakkuk 2:18
When I read this verse, I envision a craftsman pouring his heart into a piece of art, only to realize that it has no power or life of its own.
Habakkuk 2:18 speaks to the futility of relying on creations of our own making, reminding us that we often place our trust in things that cannot speak or act on our behalf. Just as the carved images are mute and lifeless, so too are the false securities and idols we create in our lives. As Christians, we are called to put our trust in the living God, who is active and powerful, rather than in the transient and unresponsive things of this world.
Prayer:
Dear Lord, help me to recognize the idols in my life and to turn my heart fully toward You. May I trust in Your living presence and not in lifeless creations. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
