“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.”
Colossians 3:1-4
What occupies your mind on a day to day basis? Is it financial responsibilities or obligations to your family? This is a challenging question for each of us, but its answer is of utmost importance. In many ways, we are what we think. Do we allow our minds to be overwhelmed with matters of the world, or are our thoughts set on things above, things concerning the Kingdom of God?
By thinking of Christ and focusing our hearts and minds on things above, we not only gain eternal perspective, but we also will not let trivial matters of the world weigh down our hearts and minds. We also will be centered on what is important in life, and feel secure in our relationship with Christ.
The more we allow ourselves to dwell on worldly things – stresses, material desires, envy, lust – the more we are prone to forget the things that matter. It is so important to intentionally set your mind on Christ first and foremost. Sometimes that’s difficult. Sometimes it’s not what we want to do, usually because we’ve become distracted by our temptations. But it is always important, always beneficial, and always better than the alternative. Find rest in Christ’s steadfast love, and put the insignificant matters of the world aside.
Prayer:
Lord,
Please help us to set our minds on you and your Kingdom. Forgive us when we fail and are overwhelmed by the world. Give us grace, forgiveness, and the will power to make you the center of our lives and minds.
In Jesus Name,
Amen.
