“Saying, ‘When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell grain?
And the Sabbath, that we may market wheat,
making the ephah small, and the shekel large,
and dealing falsely with balances of deceit;” – Amos 8:5
When I read this verse, I picture a bustling marketplace where people are eagerly waiting for the Sabbath to end so they can return to their business dealings, their hearts filled with greed rather than gratitude.
**Amos 8:5** reminds us of the dangers of allowing our desire for material gain to overshadow our commitment to God and His holy days. The people in Amos’s time were so consumed by their profit motives that they lost sight of the sacredness of the Sabbath and the importance of honesty in their dealings. As Christians, we must be vigilant against the temptation to prioritize work and financial gain over our relationship with God and the integrity with which we conduct our lives.
Prayer:
Dear Lord, help me to honor You in all my dealings and to find joy in resting in Your presence rather than chasing after worldly gain. May my heart always reflect Your values of honesty and love. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
