“In Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.”
2 Corinthians 5:19
You may have heard it said that the entire Bible, Old Testament and New Testament, is really just one story – the story of God redeeming his people. Everything in Scripture led to Jesus, all the prophets, the law, the judges, all of it. It was all pointing to Jesus from the very beginning. The New Testament is the story of all of that being fulfilled.
That’s what this verse in 2 Corinthians is all about. Paul explains that the truth of the gospel is this – that Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of all the Scripture, of thousands of years of God working to reconcile the world to himself, to make a final and ultimate sacrifice to bridge the gap that our sin had created.
That’s the whole reason that Christ came, to fulfill the plan that God had set into place from the beginning, to reconcile us all to him, so that we could all have a relationship with him just as he had always intended.
Now we, having been told this gospel, and having been saved by our faith in it, have been entrusted. We have been given a mission. God has set all of this in our hands and sent us to spread this message of reconciliation with the world. The sacrifice has been made, the victory has been won, but there is still work to do as long as there are people who have not heard and have not seen and have not experienced the reconciliation of Jesus.
That’s our purpose here. That’s our life’s work. To be ambassadors to the message of reconciliation with God through Jesus Christ his son.
Prayer:
Father,
Thank you for the gift of reconciliation that you have been working out from the beginning of time. Thank you for your son and the freedom we have through him. Help us to be strong and dedicated to our mission of spreading the message of reconciliation.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen
