“For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.”
1 Corinthians 15:3-5
Sometimes we get so caught up in the details and technicalities of everything that we forget to dwell on the simple truth of the gospel. Paul lays it all out, plain and simple, in 1 Corinthians 15. He says that the most important thing he could possibly say to them was the simple message of the gospel. Jesus was crucified, he died, he was buried, and on the third day he rose from the dead. In doing this he fulfilled all of the books of the prophets and the law. Jesus, the son of God, came to the earth to live as a man, a servant to all, to fulfill perfectly every iota of the law, to withstand every temptation, and to pay the debt for our sins with his own blood.
As profound and as awe inspiring as that is, many times we let that truth fall by the wayside as we focus on other things, trivial things, that divide us and fog our vision. This is the truth that we know is of utmost importance. This is the truth that we know saves us. This is the truth.
Let’s not deny the power of this profound truth by diluting it with the tedium of doctrine and legalism. Let’s not allow this amazing truth to fall out of focus in our lives. Let’s live every day knowing that this gospel is of first importance. Above all else, let us live by the knowledge that Jesus Christ has set us free from our sin by his death on the cross. Let us live by the knowledge that God has given us a path to eternity with him through the sacrifice of his one and only son. Let that truth permeate every thought, word, and action we take.
Praise God for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Prayer:
Father,
Thank you for the gospel. Thank you for the truth of Jesus Christ that has set me free. Let me dwell on this gospel all the days of my life, and let it be my identity. Let everything I do flow from this fundamental truth, that Jesus is my savior.
In Christ’s Name,
Amen.
