“For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.”
2 Timothy 4:3
Well, I think the time has come. If this verse doesn’t describe our very own day and age, I don’t know what does. More than ever, we live in a world where we can surround ourselves only the people and thoughts and ideas that line up with what we already think and believe. The news channel we watch depends on what party we belong to. On social media, we follow who we like and we block who we don’t agree with. If an idea doesn’t line up with what we already believe, we just tune it out.
The same has become true of our theology. Instead of wrestling with difficult truths, people just twist and mold the word of God to fit whatever they want it to say.
Let there be no confusion, this is not good.
There is one gospel, one name through which we are saved, one way, one truth, one life, one good shepherd, one bread of life, one God. There is no other way to salvation, there is no other path to righteousness.
Let us be strong in our faith, let us be diligent in our study that we will not be swayed by false teaching or be tempted to pander only to ourselves, surrounding ourselves with teachers that will only say what our ears want to hear.
Christians are not immune to this. In fact, many of us have already fallen victim to it. Study scripture, search out the truth for yourself in prayer and in the Word. Commit yourself to finding and knowing the truth, and beware of those who would sway you otherwise.
These are trying times. We must hold firm to the truth.

Father,
Thank you for the truth of the gospel. Thank you for the good teachings that we can learn from in your word, so that we will not be tossed around by every tide of the world. Help us to know and discern the truth and not be swayed by the world.
