Daily Devotional – Proverbs 18:11 – August 18, 2023

“The wealth of the rich is their fortified city; they imagine it a wall too high to scale.”
Proverbs 18:11

There are a lot of things that we use in this life to give us security. Often it’s wealth. We feel like as long as we can keep a certain amount of money, we’ll be able to handle whatever life may bring. We will have food, shelter, and safety. Money is the fortified city that we build around our lives so that we feel secure.

Sometimes it’s not money. It can be hoards of food or weapons. It can be a reputation. It can be a group of people. But whatever it is, it isn’t as tall of a wall as you may think. Often when we feel most secure with material or worldly things, it’s not nearly as secure as we feel.

We seek security in money and other things because it’s tangible. It’s here with us today, it has immediate effects on our life. It’s easy. But it’s an idol. When we place our trust and our security and ultimately, our faith, in money or material goods or even people, we’re taking our trust, security, and faith out of God’s hands.

God’s hands are the only place where we are truly safe, the only real fortified city. Without God, our lives are up to the whims of the world. Anything could happen to take our security blanket away. Our money could be worth nothing tomorrow. Every material thing can be destroyed or taken or lost in a moment. Every person in our lives is, whether we want to believe it or not, fallible. Every person we know will one day die and not be with us on this Earth anymore. None of these things are stable ground to build your city walls around. Only God is. He is the one truly stable, unchanging, unfailing thing.

The good news is, he loves you and he wants you to come to him with your faith and your security and your trust. He won’t let you down. He never will.

Prayer:

God,
Thank you for being unchanging, always righteous, and always stable for us. Thank you for the security you’ve given us by calling us to be your own. Help us never to put too much weight in the importance of our money, things, or people. Help us to trust you above all, and to put our full faith and trust in you.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
