Daily Devotional – Revelation 21:3-4 – July 20, 2023

“And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
Revelation 21:3-4

I don’t know about you, but I have a hard time imagining heaven. I don’t think that my mind can really grasp or understand the glory of it. Of course, there are the typical images that we’ve all heard – the pearly gates, streets of gold, and more – but it’s hard to imagine it when there’s nothing on Earth that compares to it. It’s almost as if it’s a foreign country that I’ve only ever heard about, but never visited or even seen pictures of. It’s hard to really get a good understanding of it.

This passage from Revelation doesn’t speak to the appearance of heaven. It doesn’t talk about pearl gates or gold streets. But it talks about something even better, something that my human mind can, at least somewhat, grasp and hold onto. It says that God will dwell among his people. He will be with them himself, openly in their presence for all to see. He will wipe away every tear. There will be no death. There will be no sorrow. There will be no pain.

That’s something I can imagine. That’s something I can put my hope in. It’s something that I’ve felt. In the highest points of life, where there was joy and happiness and peace, I experienced a small portion of what is to come. Of course, on Earth those moments don’t last. But in heaven, they will be eternal.

Close your eyes and imagine it. No matter what pain you feel, what loss you’ve suffered, what stress is plaguing your life, it will all disappear. It will be replaced instead with the glory of the presence of God. He will live among us, his perfect glory no longer concealed because of our sin, but plain for all to see. Now that’s a beautiful sight.

Prayer:

Father,
Thank you for this glimpse of the glory of heaven. I am so thankful for the redemption that you’ve offered me through Jesus, that I may one day experience this eternal life with you. Help me to live each day with my eyes set on heaven, keeping my life in perspective of eternity.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
