Temporary, an adjective meaning not permanent, lasting only for a short time.
Everything around us is temporary. The people around you, the things you own, the house you live in, the car you drive – all temporary. As sad, and honestly sometimes scary, as it may be to think about it, everything around us is fleeting, even ourselves. Our lives on this earth are just a blink of an eye compared to the eternity that awaits us.
“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but what is unseen,” says Paul. He tells us that there is very little to gain from being too caught up on the things of this world – materialism, wealth, vanity, etc., because it is all temporary. It will all be gone in just a matter of years. God, however, is eternal. Our life with God in heaven will be eternal. So what makes more sense to focus our energy on? The temporary or the eternal? My bet is on the eternal.
How much do you worry about your life? About money, work, status, material possessions? Now compare that to how much time you spend focusing on your relationship with God. How does it match up? I’m willing to bet that you probably spend more time on the former than the latter – so do I. It’s only natural. But that doesn’t mean it’s beneficial.
We should be focusing all of our energy, our efforts, our talents, and our time to the only lasting thing – God. Our relationship with God is only just beginning, and at the end of our lives we will still have eternity left to spend with him. It’s infinitely more important to invest in now than any of the temporary things that we typically are concerned with.
It’s a difficult task to be sure, but don’t be discouraged. The more time you spend with Him, the more you will see the importance of your relationship with Him. It will always be worth it. And if you think you might’ve had your priorities mixed up, don’t worry. It’s not too late to start now. Trust me, it’s the best investment you could ever make.

Heavenly Father,
Help me to fix my eyes on you. Help me not to be distracted by the flashy things of the world – the traps that Satan has laid for me to forget about what’s important. Thank you for offering me the perfect gift of eternal life with you, and I pray that you will help me to invest my time on this Earth wisely.
