Daily Devotional – Song of Solomon 2:15 – June 17, 2023

“Catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that ruin the vineyards, our vineyards that are in bloom.” Song of Solomon 2:15

How often do you find yourself “picking your battles?” You try to live a life that is pleasing to God for the most part, but there are just some things that you’re either too invested in or too addicted to or that are just too difficult to change. It’s not uncommon to see this in the Bible either. How often have you read through the Bible and seen how one individual, who for the most part seems to follow God well, still seems to mess up in a big way? One that may come to mind is King David and his adulterous affair with Bathsheba, an affair that quickly turned to cover up murder, almost causing King David to lose his throne. As you reflect on this story, I think it is easy to argue that King David didn’t just make one mistake. Instead his lust led him to make a series of bad decisions leading to sin, lies, and deceit. With this story in mind, reflect upon the verse at the beginning of the devotional. The little foxes or little decisions lead to complete destruction of vineyard. In your own life, the little compromises, small things you look over may lead to a bigger failure.

Perhaps it begins small, such as a simple white lie. But lie after lie, time after time, leads to your personal demise. The small foxes are the ones who lead to the ruin of the vineyard. Sin starts small. It may begin as a small lie, or even watching a provocative show on Netflix. Over time, those small compromises begin to build until you may find yourself far from the truth or even addicted to pornography. Be mindful and conscious of your daily “slip ups”. Are your decisions holding true to your character and the Christian life you want to live? Or are you making small compromises that can lead you down a dangerous path of sin?

Prayer:

Father,
Please help me to watch and catch the little foxes in the vineyard I call my life. Help me to bloom in your image, and to make daily choices that are honoring to you. Please forgive me when I let my guard down and make poor decisions, and help guide me through my daily decisions.
