“Choose twelve men from among the people, one from each tribe, and tell them to take up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, from right where the priests are standing, and carry them over with you and put them down at the place where you stay tonight.”
Joshua 4:2-3
Throughout the Old and New Testament, there are many examples where God instructed his people to build a memorial or alter to help his people remember what he had done for them. Similar to war memorials today, the Biblical memorials also served as a reminder of the history of what good God had done for them. In this particular instance, God had the Israelites lay down twelve stones to serve as a reminder that God dried up the Jordan so the Israelites could cross on dry ground with the Ark of the Covenant. God did this so that all of the people on earth would see and know how all-powerful the Israelite’s God was.
At times it may be easy for us to forget God’s goodness in our lives. We may forget the good things he has done for us. Take a moment and reflect on all of the good things that God has done in your life. How will you choose to continue remembering or honoring God for his goodness? Will you journal, or write down your praises? Or will you use your phone to set reminders of significant dates/things he has done in your life? Whatever you choose to do, make sure you take the time and effort to be aware of the things God is doing in your life. Be mindful to fight off spiritual amnesia that blinds you from remembering. Be cautious not to be like the Israelites who forgot that God had delivered them from the Egyptians, crossed the Red Sea on dry land, only to find themselves in the dessert grumbling against God. Life is busy and stressful, but never forget to commemorate the good he has done.

God,
We praise you and thank you for all of the good you have done in our lives. Thank you for providing for us and giving us far more than we deserve. Lord, help us to be more attentive to the ways that you are working in our lives.
