On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Today, I want you to be reminded that Jesus didn’t come to the earth looking for perfect people to bring back with him to heaven. If he did, he would’ve been very disappointed, I’m sure. Instead, Jesus came for those of us who aren’t perfect, who need help, like you and I. This is important for two reasons, and it’s possible that you may fall into one or both of these.
First, if you believe yourself to be a “good person,” a rule-follower, a bona-fide Christian, beware. Reread the verse above. Who did Jesus say he came for? Was it the “healthy” people? Was it the righteous? Think again. He came for the sinners. And lest you forget where you stand, ask yourself this question. Do I want to be among those people that Jesus claimed that he wasn’t there to call, or do I want to recognize my true nature as a sinner and my dire need for a savior, and receive Jesus’ call? If you chose the latter, read on.
Second, if you’re feeling like you’re not worthy, like you’re too far gone, too lost, too dirty, or too full of sin to be saved, think again. Jesus didn’t say he was only here for sort-of sick people. He’s not limited to the sniffles and stomach-aches. He’s here for all of the sick. No matter if it’s a headache or a broken back, he’s the great physician that came to heal. Now, of course, this is all a metaphor. The point is, Jesus didn’t put a limit on how much he can forgive. There is no sickness that he cannot save. There’s no darkness he can’t light up. There’s no sin he can’t redeem. Take heart, he came for you, and he won’t give up on you. Repent, leave behind the sins that have plagued you, and follow him into a new life. He can make you well.

God,
Thank you for coming not for the prim and proper but the sick, dirty, beat up sinners like me. Thank you that you don’t require perfection from me, only faith and repentance. I pray that you’d humble me and help me realize that I am a sinner in need of saving, but also that you’d give me the faith the know that despite this, Jesus loved me enough to offer me eternal life.
