“We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. For since the message spoken through angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him.”
Hebrews 2:1-3
Every spiritual journey is full of its highs and lows – mountain top experiences and deep gut-wrenching valleys. Many Christians can look back in retrospect and learn to appreciate the different seasons of their spiritual walk. The difficult valley experiences teach endurance and perseverance, while mountaintop highs bring about feelings of praise and gratefulness.
Yet, what about seasons of spiritual drift? Seasons that begin as skipping a daily devotional for a day or two, sleeping in through church because the kids are sick and tired, etc. The Bible gives strong warning to heed against spiritual drift. Spiritual drift may not seem like big things at the time, but if we are not vigilant, our drifting can lead us into the difficult, polluted waters of sin. Spiritual drifting happens so quietly and gradually, that we as Christians are often unaware of our drift.
To be on guard against spiritual drifting, look for signs in your life that might reflect a slow drift. Have you neglected God’s Word through reading, or prayer? Have you stopped coming together with fellow Christians in fellowship through worship or Bible Study? Have you surrounded yourself with individuals of poor character who may be leading you astray? Have you become preoccupied with the ways or things of the world such as money, job satisfaction, or materialism? These all could be warning signs or indicators that you have begun to drift.
Be vigilant. Be on guard against the Enemy, and do not give him the satisfaction of drawing you away from the Lord and His Salvation for you.
Prayer:
Lord,
There have been, are now, or will be times for all of us where we drift away from you. Father, I pray you give me the strength to recognize early when I have begun to drift from you, and give me the strength to come back to you and your salvation humbly. Father forgive me for the times that I have listened to the ways of the world and help me to develop a strong intimate relationship with you.
