Prayer As Incense

Prayer As Incense

Prayer is an essential part of many religious traditions and serves as a means of connecting with a higher power or divine presence. In many spiritual practices, prayer is likened to the burning of incense, where the fragrant smoke rises up as an offering to the heavens. This analogy is not merely symbolic, but carries deep spiritual significance in many traditions. Prayer as incense emphasizes the importance of the quality of our prayers, their intention, and the state of our hearts when we offer them. It is a beautiful reminder that our prayers are not just words, but a means of lifting our hearts and souls to the divine, and that they have the power to transform us from the inside out.

Prayer As Incense 1

We believe that the ceremonies and symbols of the law have ceased with the coming of Christ, and that all shadows have been fulfilled, so that the use of them ought to be abolished among Christians. Yet their truth and substance remain for us in Jesus Christ, in whom they have been fulfilled. In the meantime we still use the testimonies taken from the law and the prophets, both to confirm us in the doctrine of the gospel and to order our life in all honesty, according to God’s will and to his glory.

Prayer As Incense 2

Aaron shall present the bull as a sin offering for himself, and shall make atonement for himself and for his house; he shall kill the bull as a sin offering for himself. And he shall take a censer full of coals of fire from the altar before the Lord, and two handfuls of sweet incense beaten small; and he shall bring it within the veil and put the incense on the fire before the Lord, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat which is upon the testimony, lest he die; and he shall take some of the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it with his finger on the front of the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat he shall sprinkle the blood with his finger seven times.

Prayer As Incense 3

The LORD said to Moses,
Take sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum, sweet spices with pure frankincense (of each shall there be an equal part), and make an incense blended as by the perfumer, seasoned with salt, pure and holy. You shall beat some of it very small, and put part of it before the testimony in the tent of meeting where I shall meet with you. It shall be most holy for you. And the incense that you shall make according to its composition, you shall not make for yourselves. It shall be for you holy to the LORD.
